Summer is almost here! This month we will focus on staying healthy in the summertime...

SUN Safety

Protect yourself from Ultraviolet (UV) rays. UV rays come from the sun and from artificial lights like tanning beds. UV rays in the continental US are strongest from 10 am to 4pm Day Light Savings time and 9am to 3pm regular time. A UV index of 3 or higher means you should take steps to protect your skin from the sun:

1. Stay in the shade

2. Wear clothing that covers your arms and legs

3. Wear a heat with a wide brim to shade your face, ears, and neck

4. Wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays

5. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher

CPR

CPR Steps:

1. Check for a pulse at the neck while watching and feeling for breaths at the chest for no more than 10 seconds

2. If no pulse, call 911 and if possible, get an AED (defibrillation device)

3. Begin chest compressions immediately

Press down 2 in on the chest at a rate of 100-120 beats per min (or to the tune of Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees, you know, “uh uh uh uh stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive”

4. Complete 30 compressions and then give 2 breaths. Continue this cycle until 911 arrives and takes over

5. If there is an AED, turn it on and follow the instructions said aloud by the device.

Water Safety

Remember all near drowning incidents must be taken to the hospital, there may lung injury that needs to be monitored even hours later

  • Even if lifeguards are present, you (or another responsible adult) should stay with your children.

  • Be a “water watcher” – provide close and constant attention to children you are supervising; avoid distractions including cell phones.

  • Teach children to always ask permission to go near water.

  • Children, inexperienced swimmers, and all boaters should wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets.

  • Take specific precautions for the water environment you are in, such as:

    • Fence pools and spas with adequate barriers, including four-sided fencing that separates the water from the house.

    • At the beach, always swim in a lifeguarded area

Have a Great Summer!
